Trump Claims US Could Seize Iran’s Oil Export Hub, Kharg Island
In an interview, Trump stated, "To be honest with you, my favourite thing is to take the oil in Iran," comparing the idea to the U.S. approach in Venezuela, where he claimed Washington plans to control the oil industry "indefinitely" following the removal of President Nicolas Maduro.
Seizing Iranian oil would involve control over Kharg Island, through which over 90 percent of Iran’s oil is exported. Trump said, "Maybe we take Kharg Island, maybe we don't. We have a lot of options," adding that such an operation "would also mean we had to be there for a while."
He further claimed that Iran’s defenses on the island are minimal, stating, "We could take it very easily."
These comments come as the U.S. increases its military presence in the Middle East while weighing a potential operation to remove nearly 1,000 pounds of uranium from Iran, according to officials.
